If you are on the fence about doing competitions here are my top 3 reasons to why you should get into it.
1. You will get 1000% better!
When a student knows that they have a competition coming up, they take their dancing very seriously. I mean who doesn’t want to impress the judges? In preparation for the competition, students take many private lessons and practice on their own much more than the average social dancers. Furthermore, competitors’ dance lessons tend to focus on developing strong dance technique. From the very beginning, they are taught that it is not important WHAT step they are dancing, but it is the HOW they are dancing it that’s important. With my competitive students, I personally spend most of the lesson time on the proper usage of leg, hip and body action for every single figure. Because of the dedication and work ethic that competitions instill, I have witnessed amazing transformations. I’ve seen students who have been dancing competitively for only 1 year become much better dancers than students who have been dancing for 5+ years socially.
2. It gives you a goal to work towards
I think that one of the biggest problems I see with social dancers is that they sometimes have nothing to look forward to. As a result, after a while, they get demotivated and quit. A competition will fix that! If you have a deadline – a specific date that you know you will have to get out on the floor on, you will stay motivated and work very hard to prepare for it. You will likely have a committed lesson and practice schedule which will keep you inspired all the way to the competition. Furthermore, you will receive instant feedback from the judges on your dancing progress from the competition results. Right after one competition you will likely set your next competition date and be inspired all over again.
3. Gives you a chance to perform
Aside from getting much better and having a goal to work towards, you will also have a chance to perform for an audience! How would like to be an actress for one day? That is that feeling you will get from competing. You will be able to express every dance in your own way and show everyone your new choreography. Not only are you going to be performing your moves with all your heart, but you will also have 2.5 inch dance shoes, a dress and accessories to help you get into character. Nowadays, many competitors also tan so that they can look good under all those lights. There is no doubt you will feel beautiful, glamorous and ready to show off your stuff.
